How does it work?
With Fractional CO2 lasers, such as BAIW's DEKA SmartXide DOT (Dermal Optical Thermolysis), only a a small portion of the skin receives the laser light. This is called “fractional skin resurfacing”. The laser utilizes a ‘dot’ pattern to create thousands of microscopic perforations in the skin while leaving the areas around each ‘dot’ intact. Thousands of tiny dots/scanned pulses of laser energy are applied which promotes immediate skin tightening and new collagen growth. After treatment, the skin heals rapidly from the edge of these tiny ‘dots’ and silkly, soft new skin begins to emerge. The healthy cells in the untouched spots promote rapid healing of the entire treatment area, resulting in faster recovery time and minimal side effects. A treatment for the full face can typically be completed in about 30 minutes. |
Is fractional CO2 laser safe?
In the past, full face resurfacing with a CO2 laser required weeks of recovery. With fractional technology, only small columns are ablated through the skin leaving uninjured skin in between from which wound healing can rapidly progress. The amount of laser energy and the density that the laser treatment is applied at can be adjusted to tailor each treatment to the desired goal. Fractional CO2 laser can be used safely on the face, neck, and most sun damaged skin including the eyelids. How long does it take to recover from the fractional CO2 procedure? The microscopic channels created during the laser treatment typically heal within a few hours after your appointment. Your skin will continue to heal from treatment, though, with recovery lasting about four to seven days. For the first 24 hours, you can expect your skin to be slightly red and feel sunburned. Some patients may experience mild swelling, which can be managed with a cold compress. After the fractional CO2 procedure, you are able to work and do all your normal activities, but you will generally not want to leave your house for a few days, as you will be very red. It is best to schedule several days off to heal after the treatment. |
How many fractional CO2 laser treatments are recommended?
The number of fractional CO2 laser treatments required depends on the goals of the procedure. For treating surface irregularities, fine lines, and discoloration, one or two treatments will typically be sufficient. However, to treat scars or deep wrinkles three of four treatments are usually necessary, several months apart. What are the potential side effects of a procedure? Potential side effects following treatment are generally mild, but include burns or skin damage, scar formation, irregular pigmentation (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation), milia (white bumps), and possible skin infections. |
